To be on the safe side and avoid any potential problems that could easily arise, you should always go to the dentist if you have a toothache. No matter how bad the pain may be, you should never attempt to pull the tooth yourself. Your dentist can numb the area before he pulls the tooth, so you’ll feel no pain at all. He will also prescribe you some pain medicine and antibiotics as well, to help treat any infection you may have. If you attempt to pull the tooth yourself, you’ll only cause more problems in the end - and end up going to a dentist anyway." http://health.vocaboly.com/11/pulling-your-own-teeth/

If you decide on an extraction rather than a root canal then you will obviously lose the tooth and have an empty space where the tooth used to be. If you opt for an implant then you can have the dentist place a titanium post in your jaw which will attach to an artificial tooth. This process may take a few months as it takes time for your gums to heal around the implant. If you don't opt for an implant then your gum tissue will heal around the extracted tooth, though you will need to keep it clean and watch out for infection.
If you were asking what happens to the physical tooth, then most likely your dentist would dispose of it. You certainly could ask them if you could keep it and I doubt they would have an objection.
