Yes.

If you are experiencing pain, you should see an oral surgeon. It is possible that the bruxism is translating into temporomandibular joint (jaw) pain. You could be clenching also. The grinding and/or clenching works your muscles all night long and can cause pain. The oral surgeon can prescribe a mouth guard for you to wear at night while you sleep; modification of your diet may be necessary too, as items that are tough and hard to chew (carrots, bagels, tough steak, etc.) can aggravate the situation. If the pain and tension are not sufficiently relieved with the use of the night guard, he may also prescribe muscle relaxants and physical therapy.

Knock on wood, I have never woke up with pain. With regards to teeth grinding, bruxism is the technical term that is used to refer to teeth grinding and clenching.

The two things that cause teeth grinding are stress and tension.

I second stress and tension. I see a number of clients who have stress and tension that is linked to bruxism. Relax...

Dr. Matt, it's easier said than done, as some people are stressed and do not know it, and it becomes habit forming to grind.

It is argued that teeth grinding is caused by the various tensions that one suffers and which is suppressed in one's mind. But there is nothing to worry as one may stop it when he reaches 30 years of age.
