Yes the Chemotherapy treatment has improved. A new form of Chemotherapy called ADVENTRX was approved by the FDA in the year 2006 with these new drugs: vinorelbine, gemcitabine (Gemzar) and docetaxel (Taxotere). A clinical study was done from the years 1994 - 2005 with two groups. The group in the years 1994-1998 used the old form of chemotherapy and the group from 2000-2005 used ADVENTRX. The second group's (2000-2005) survival rate increased by 16%.

Chemo therapy success rate depends on the type of cancer and the mutations of cancer involved. If you have a mutation in a tumor suppressor gene called p53, then chemo therapy will have little chance of helping the patient.

This gene causes the cell to enter programmed cell death ie apoptosis, and that's what chemo does. Chemo causes the cell to kill its self when its exposed to toxic chemicals, or radiation. If p53 is mutated then the cell will not be able to do this, and the cancerous cells will remain living, spreading, and growing.
