---quote---
* I just want to get drunk.
* People think it's cool when you can drink a lot.
* Everybody else is doing it.
* My friends are telling me to do it.
* I'm stressed out about work (or school).

Having had my own struggles with drinking (including binge drinking), I think they are three or four reasons people binge drink.
1. It's an escape, they like being drunk and getting away from their problems and stresses for awhile. Could it be possible that they just need to discover other stress effective stress relievers that are not so destructive?
2. They feel like they are entitled to a little fun, a good time where NOBODY can tell them when, where, or how much to drink. Like several of the other reasons that people binge drink, this reasoning is totally self centered. That's never a good place to be.
3. Some people enjoy the attention they get when they are drunk. It sounds sort of twisted, and it is, but standing on a table flailing your arms around singing at the top of your lungs is not something you do if you want no-one to notice you.
4. The elephant in the room. You may have alcoholic tendencies or (oh no not this) you may actually be suffering from early stage alcoholism. If so, no amount of analyzing and understanding your behavior will help. You will need to seek help. You can do it on the QT, don't worry.
Finally, this is a problem you would rather solve sooner than later. Trust me, you don't want to wait until after you first or second drunk driving arrest, or worse yet after you lose a job or a sweetheart. God forbid that in the process of solving this yourself or putting it off, you kill yourself or someone else on the road, burn your house down, or put children in harms way. This problem is solvable. Every year millions of people change their behavior and/or begin recovering from abuse of alcohol (or alcoholism), and trust me, they lead much happier lives because of it. Imagine taking that special little boy fishing on Saturday morning instead of laying in bed or hugging the toilet, too "sick" to do anything, and hating yourself for it again.

Ignore this answer. I put my nomination for AotD here instead of in the reply. Sorry!

thanks twin. Sometimes an answer is just an answer, sometimes it is really good life advice that would really help somebody if they would just follow it. This Q & A is one that is affecting real lives outside of the internet.
