Spina bifida is a disorder involving incomplete development of the spinal cord, and bowel and bladder problems can result if the nerves to these organs are affected. Minor nerve damage can result in muscle spasms, and the Ditropan is meant to relax the bladder muscles and decrease both the need and the urge to urinate. However, if the nerve damage is more extensive, your son may have little or no control over his urination, in which case Ditropan and toilet training may not work.

For now, follow the doctor's advice about the Ditropan, but don't be disappointed if it doesn't work, and don't put too much pressure on your son to get toilet trained. If the Ditropan hasn't worked after two months, see the doctor again to discuss further options.

I would seriously consider broaching this with the doctor again. There are several reasons that this could be happening, get a second opinion. I work at a hospital and am a nursing student, I would do this just to make sure. No, I'm not trying to worry you. Sometimes the elderly and others have the same problem. We use a bladder training program. Start by taking your child to potty at the same time everyday and do so frequently. This may or may not help depending on why he is "leaking urine". There are several types of incontinence and the medication may take a little longer to help. Even if it doesn't seem to be helping it will eventually become better and by doing this, you are reinforcing potty training. Just hang in there, I hope that it works out. I can not stress enough that you talk to the physician about this. He/she may be able to help more than you think. Good luck and I hope this helps. However, do not expect results overnight.
