My son will be 12 in a few weeks and of course is too old for the chewable medicines, so when there is no liquid on hand we have had to tackle the pill and capsule issue. After watching him gag and choke a few times I finally had to put the pill in a spoonful of applesauce and give it to him that way. This doesn't work all the time because if he thinks about it too hard his tongue will "find" the pill and we have to start over. It's just a matter of getting them over the anxiety of swallowing something without chewing.

Thanks, suzalcie, for your helpful answer. Nice to hear opinions from everyone about my question, i feel better now i've got a lot of options, and to know i'm not alone.
Now, i pinpointed the cause of the child's hesitance, hope to be successful next time when he has to take a pill again.

If it's in tablet form, you can crush it to pieces then mix it with your kid's favorite food... I think you could do the same with capsules... Just empty the contents of the capsule by pulling the two sides then, same as what I said a while ago, put it in his/her food. This way, he won't notice that you child is already taking his food... ^^

Oh, there's also the banana trick. ^^ Just insert the tablet or capsule somewhere in the middle where he/she won't notice it. Let's just pray your kid wouldn't spit it out once he/she got on that part.

I still would suggest the first trick. :) I think most parents do this.

We did that when he was a bit younger than now, I guess kids know the trick already. Can't do that now, he is getting bigger, we want them to get over it.
Thanks for your answer, fallen_angel21

Hmm, I guess the only thing left is to explain to him why he has to take the medicine. As you said a while ago, he's growing up so I guess it's about time that he would understand things better now... :)

One trick that always work with kids is offering a bribe :)
Why don't you offer him a dollar (or 50 cents) for each pill he needs to take. Then he'll be looking forward to taking a pill as there's something in it for him.

If you don't want to 'thank' him for taking a pill you can think of a punishment if he doesn't, like no pill - no Internet for a day.

I would not suggest to be inventive and try to fool your child into taking a pill without him knowing, because if he finds out you tricked him, he might get offended and develop a trust issue with you.

Buffer it with a bribe - skittle a "m and m" etc.
Make it something though that is not a normal treat.

Let him practice with tic tacs. It takes a while to get used to taking pills. Or, find out if there is a suppository available and tell your child that if he can't take it by mouth, you'll order that version.

If it's an issue as to having trouble swallowing I have a child who has trouble swallowing pills too. And mine slide back up my throat. With my son, I always explain why he needs to take them pill. If it's something like Tylenol that isn't a must, then he can opt not to take it.

If it's something for allergies or asthma, then I explain why it's important to take it and explain what while happen if he doesn't take it (your rash gets worst, you'll itch, it'll burn and you'll wish you took the pill or possible death depending on the condition).

If he agrees that the pill is too difficult to swallow, I crush it and put it in a spoonful of pudding for him. He is fully aware of this. And he takes it that way. Since it is particularly nasty that way, I give him chocolate milk to chase it with and then he gets to eat the rest of the pudding cup.

If it's that the pill keeps sliding up his throat, have him eat a banana after taking the pill. It will help push the pill down his throat.
