Yes, the swine flu vaccine is as safe as the regular flu vaccine.
FACTS:
=======
1. THE SWINE FLU VACCINE IS MADE THE SAME WAY THE SEASONAL FLU VACCINE IS.
That's right, it's the same shot. Made by the same labs using the same processes. In fact, if the timing had worked better, the H1N1 virus would've been included with our seasonal flu shot.(1) (4) So if you feel comfortable getting the seasonal flu shot, you should feel equally comfortable with the H1Ni shot.
2. YOU CANNOT GET THE SWINE FLU FROM THE VACCINE.
The vaccine that is given as a shot contains only killed virus, meaning that you do not run a risk of catching the swine flu from the vaccine. Let me type that again: You CANNOT get the swine flu from the vaccine shot. Now, the type of flu vaccine (H1N1 included) that is given by mouth DOES contain weakened live virus, which does carry a risk of infecting people. Most doctors advise against the weakened virus version. (2)(3)
3.PREGNANT WOMEN AND CHILDREN ARE ADVISED TO GET THIS VACCINE.
The CDC and American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) recommend that pregnant women should receive the swine flu vaccine. (5)
MYTHS AND FALSEHOODS:
======================
1. "THE SWINE FLU IS UNTESTED."
False. No safety shortcuts have been taken with this vaccine. It is FDA approved and to quote my Source (1), flu.gov:
-quote-
"Still, understanding that some Americans have concerns about “new” vaccines, the National Institutes of Health and the vaccine manufacturers have conducted more rigorous tests on the H1N1 vaccine than they do on other flu vaccines, and there have been no red flags from these clinical trials. "
-endquote-
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now with all of that in mind, with every single vaccination there is a certain risk for side effects--some minor, some serious. The CDC has determined these risks to be very minimal compared with the risks of Influenza (including and especially H1N1).
So do take that into consideration, but please don't let fear and misinformation cloud your judgment on the safety of this crucial vaccine.
My gut reaction is no.
Researchers are discovering unnecessary chemicals in the vaccine. In one poll, almost half the people felt "the vaccine has side effects that can lead to death or serious health problems." Here's a weird stat: "People allergic to eggs should not get the vaccine." Have no idea what's up with that.
I know many horrible diseases have all but been eliminated because of vaccines. I just don't think flu shots, in general, in my opinion, are going to be all that effective. And from what I have heard, H1N1 is not as deadly as the media would have us believe. We've been through some nasty flus in the past, and living through them has strengthened immune systems. That's why I've never opted for any flu shot. Polio vaccine? You bet!!
I'm sorry, but a poll is not scientific evidence. It's like asking people living near high voltage cables whether they suffer from headaches because of that.
From the article you linked: "most health experts vouch for the safety of the H1N1 vaccine". I presume they have tests and reports to back their vouch. I trust them better than the 'gut feeling' by the average Joe.
I can answer your question about the egg issue.
Both types of flu vaccine are made with egg. So there may be some levels of egg protein in each dose of vaccine. Hence the idea that people with egg vaccines should use extreme caution.
Vaccine Safety
The 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine is expected to have a similar safety profile as seasonal flu vaccines, which have a very good safety track record. Over the years, hundreds of millions of Americans have received seasonal flu vaccines.
CDC expects that any side effects following vaccination with the 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine would be rare. If side effects occur, they will likely be similar to those experienced following seasonal influenza vaccine. Mild problems that may be experienced include soreness, redness, or swelling where the shot was given, fainting (mainly adolescents), headache, muscle aches, fever, and nausea. If these problems occur, they usually begin soon after the shot and last 1-2 days. Life-threatening allergic reactions to vaccines are very rare. If they do occur, it is usually within a few minutes to a few hours after the shot is given. If any unusual condition occurs following vaccination, seek medical attention right away.
Swine Flu Vaccine Seems Safe: Experts
-quote-
"There have been no red flags at all," Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told HealthDay.
A trial designed to test the vaccine on healthy adults began on Aug. 7, while another trial involving children started Aug. 18.
"We wanted to wait about a week after the first trial to see if there were any glaring safety issues. There were not, so one-and-a-half weeks later, we started the trial in children," Fauci said.
And Fauci is optimistic that the vaccine will continue to be safe.
"It's unlikely there will be safety issues," he said. "We don't expect any because this vaccine is strikingly similar to the seasonal vaccine we give every year to millions and millions and millions of people."
The flu vaccine hasn't had sufficient testing in my opinion to deem it safe. I'm sure plenty of people could post links to refute that fact, but the time frame it was released in speaks wonders to me.
The media and the government took a new strain of the flu, blew it up, made it scary and then when they realized the people were demanding action popped out a magic vaccine which is basically a beefed up possibly dangerous version of the regular old flu shot to appease everyone.
In my personal opinion people in general in regards to the flu are better off living healthy and letting their immune system do the rest than relying on vaccines that cannot even be proven to not cause autism as it has been suggested they do.
If you take a vaccine for every little thing, super sanitize your home and never allow your immune system to work, yes it will weaken and things like the flu will send you to the hospital. However, I personally have known a few people who got Swine Flu and they said it was indeed worse than the regular flu, far more shakes and fevers, but it didn't kill them or put them in this hospital. we are allowing our fear to over-ride our judgment. If the government attempted to release a barely tested vaccine and administer it to our youth when they hadn't convinced and scared the mass populace there was a "deadly epidemic" people would be up in arms, but not to get their shot. Enough said.
Hi, @unwirklich! Hope you're well today!
Listen, we've disagreed on this topic before, so I won't bore you with repeating some of the things I've already commented about.
I just want to suggest to you that the labs didn't need to whip out a "magic" vaccine. Their labs are designed to work at this pace, testing included. It is FDA approved.
The other point I'll make quickly (and then I'll leave you alone) is that although normally I REALLY support people making sure they just have a healthy immune system, this flu is kind of unique in that what is killing so many young, healthy adults is that their immune systems OVER-react. That's what's causing a lot of the young adult deaths. So, sometimes taking medical precautions can be a good idea.
Cheers. :)
Though I appreciate your opinion, I don't think I need to share with an intelligent woman like yourself how many "FDA approved" drugs, vaccines and products have later been discovered to do all array of horrible things.
The fact is anything that doesn't under-go proper testing will end up having unknown long term effects, and that is the case here.
On the other note, if you actually look into the cases of death in young "healthy" adults you find they were not in fact "healthy".. the very first link I even clicked from one google search was able to back that up...
2/3 of the kids that have died had underlying conditions.
Only 2.. count them 2.. received proper medical treatment.
-http://www.cidrap.umn.edu/cidrap/content/influenza/swineflu/news/sep0309kids.html"
This is also interesting..
"about 9,000 hospitalized with 600 deaths -- is lower than the toll for regular seasonal flu, which causes about 36,000 deaths in a typical year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "
-http://www.miamiherald.com/1484/story/1279559.html
The flu has always killed people, the media just didn't shove it in your face before to distract from the government short comings. Fear always over comes logic.
Okay, well you've got me on the FDA thing...
The Swine Flu vaccine itself is safe. However, there are different types of vaccines, and some are better than other. In Germany, there is much controversy, because the government ordered a better type of vaccine for itself, compared to the one for the public.
The 'ordinary' one (by manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline) contains less actual working substances, and uses a separate 'enhancer' to strengthen the working substances. This enhancer can cause fevers and headaches as side-effects.
The 'better' vaccine (the one for the government itself, produced by Baxter) contains more working substances, and therefore doesn't need the enhancer.
Both work and are safe, but the ordinary one can cause some slight discomfort...
The H1N1 vaccine has many components that make it up. More than 5 of the components that make up the vaccine HAVE NOT been tested on anything or anyone. This can mean a number of things,It can cause allergic reactions,Side effects,even possible death.
As we all know the Flu vaccine every year is based on the previous years strain.Therefore each year the flu vaccine is made of different componenets also.It is a matter of educating yourself. Are you at high risk for getting the flu or H1N1? Are you sick or have immunity issues? If not,Then reconcider if you really need to get it.
Here is one example.
Vaccines which have been approved by the responsible government authorities for vaccination against the alleged H1N1 Influenza A Swine Flu have been found to contain nano particles. Vaccine makers have been experimenting with nanoparticles as a way to “turbo charge” vaccines for several years. Now it has come out that the vaccines approved for use in Germany and other European countries contain nanoparticles in a form that reportedly attacks healthy cells and can be deadly.
Interesting information, Lisa, as I'm not very familiar with standards outside the U.S. (and FYI, there are many different versions and standards of H1N1 vaccine around the world).
The only thing is that I'd like to read more, so it'd be great if you could be sure to include a link to a source in your answers/comments (especially when quoting....read more here about citation on this site: Copying and Pasting on Mahalo).
But in case no one's said it yet, welcome to Mahalo. :)
If this H1N1 vaccine is "So Safe."
Why is the The package insert for the Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine manufactured by Novartis has so many "Disclaimers" and "Side "Effects"
According to that package insert, the vaccine (based on an earlier vaccine product known as Fluvirin) is known to cause a whole host of very nasty side effects such as guillain-barre syndrome, vasculitis, anaphylactic shock and even death.
The following is a list of some of the very nasty side effects that the vaccine package insert admits to.....
*Local injection site reactions (including pain, pain limiting limb movement, redness, swelling, warmth, ecchymosis, induration)
*Hot flashes/flushes
*Chills
*Fever
*Malaise
*Shivering
*Fatigue
*Asthenia
*Facial edema.
*Immune system disorders
*Hypersensitivity reactions (including throat and/or mouth edema)
*In rare cases, hypersensitivity reactions have lead to anaphylactic shock and death
*Cardiovascular disorders
*Vasculitis (in rare cases with transient renal involvement)
*Syncope shortly after vaccination
*Digestive disorders
*Diarrhea
*Nausea
*Vomiting
*Abdominal pain.
*Blood and lymphatic disorders
*Local lymphadenopathy
*Transient thrombocytopenia.
*Metabolic and nutritional disorders
*Loss of appetite.
*Arthralgia
*Myalgia
*Myasthenia
*Nervous system disorders
*Headache
*Dizziness
*Neuralgia
*Paraesthesia
*Febrile convulsions
*Guillain-Barré Syndrome
*Myelitis (including encephalomyelitis and transverse myelitis)
*Neuropathy (including neuritis)
*Paralysis (including Bell’s Palsy)
*Respiratory disorders
*Dyspnea
*Chest pain
*Cough
*Pharyngitis
*Rhinitis
*Stevens-Johnson syndrome
*Pruritus
*Urticaria
*Rash (including non-specific, maculopapular, and vesiculobulbous).
In the 1976 Swine Flu Outbreak. 1 Died, 13 Hospitalized and 25 Died due "vaccine caused side-effects" due to Guillain-Barré syndrome, a paralyzing neuromuscular disorder,
500 cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome resulted in death from severe pulmonary complications for 25 people, were caused by an immunopathological reaction to the 1976 vaccine. Other influenza vaccines have not been linked to Guillain-Barré syndrome
Conclusion: More people actually died from the vaccine than from the actual swine flu itself.
Great use of sources and videos, I would recommend however putting quotes around copied text, check out the Copy and Pasting on Mahalo guidelines.
of course it is safe. Before a vaccine is sold it must be tried and tested
but like some other vaccines it might not be suitable for all. cos some people might be allergic to it.
A lot of medical proffessionals say it is just like getting a regular seasonal swine flu shot, and that it is beneficial to take the shot. That being said, it has not been extensively tested. As a person who never gets a flu shot, I am very hesitant to get the Swine flu vaccine. I would say it is best to avoid heavily trafficed public places and to wash your hands often and keep them away from your face. Keeping your nose and throat clear is also a good way to keep the virus from infecting you.
With any medical procedure, drug, or shot, there are some risks involved. With the H1N1 vaccine, as with any other vaccine, there are risks of allergic reaction to the materials used in creating the vaccine, as well as risks related to the components of the inactivated virus. These risks should be similar to those of the seasonal flu vaccines, as they are produced in the same way, using the same materials. The decision as to proceeding or not should be based on the relative risk of not getting the shot, compared with getting it.
The risks of not getting the shot are desribed in an August 2009 report in USA Today, which quoted a report from the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. The council report nearly half of the US population could contract the swine flu (or H1N1 virus), with an estimated 30,000 to 90,000 expected fatalities resulting - http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2009-08-24-swine-flu-vaccine_N.htm.
As for the risks of getting the shot, the CDC says "We expect the 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine to have a similar safety profile as seasonal flu vaccines, which have a very good safety track record. Over the years, hundreds of millions of Americans have received seasonal flu vaccines" - http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/vaccination/vaccine_safety_qa.htm. Since the vaccine is developed using the same techniques, with the same materials (except obviously with the different dead viruses), there should not be any elevated risks. The CDC further says that "The viruses in the flu shot are killed (inactivated), so you cannot get the flu from a flu shot."
The balance of risks thus seems to clearly favor getting the H1N1 flu vaccine.
The risks of not getting the shot are desribed in an August 2009 report in USA Today, which quoted a report from the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. The council report nearly half of the US population could contract the swine flu (or H1N1 virus), with an estimated 30,000 to 90,000 expected fatalities resulting - http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2009-08-24-swine-flu-vaccine_N.htm.
As for the risks of getting the shot, the CDC says "We expect the 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine to have a similar safety profile as seasonal flu vaccines, which have a very good safety track record. President Obama has declared swine flu is a national emergency (see http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091024/ap_on_he_me/us_obama_swine_flu ). The report states over 1000 have died of swine flu in the US. This places the average risk of fatality due to not getting an H1N1 flu shot at higher than 1:300,000 and expected to climb to a few per 10,000. The risk for serious side effects is much lower, at a few per million - "Approved vaccines -- including the 2009 H1N1 swine flu vaccine -- are calculated to be much, much less risky than the diseases they prevent. For example, out of every million people who get a flu shot, one or two will get a serious neurological reaction called Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS).
But flu itself causes serious problems, including GBS, in far more than two in a million cases. And since a large proportion of the population will get swine flu, the vaccine risk is far smaller than the disease risk (http://www.webmd.com/cold-and-flu/features/is-the-h1n1-swine-flu-vaccine-safe ).
I would like to point out that FDA approval does not necessarily mean that something is safe. Safety can only be measured over time. There have been numerous FDA approved products that have been later found to have some significant side effects and lose its approval rating.
The Swine Flu vaccine has its own laundry list of possible side effects. When getting the vaccine, you are acknowledging that you are aware and ok with the possibility of having any of the listed side effects.
I would only get the swine flu vaccine if I felt the risk of getting any of the side effects was much lower and less severe than the possibility of actually getting the swine flu. Obviously, this decision is much more important when you're pregnant and effectively making the decision for two people.
well i have a friend that got the shot and shes fine,she hase'nt said anything about it.
I'm just a biologist, so my knowledge is a bit general, but like everyone else, i'm interested in the swine flu...
my opinion is that even if it is not safe,,, it is still better than being unprotected at all.
you see... the winter is on the door. and the swine flu might become really spread globally... so even if the disease is less fatal that it seems, i still recommend people to have the vaccine.
By the way, she's in a wheelchair permanently because her parents were nervous about the Polio Vaccine in the 50s. There are sad stories that surround disease, on both sides of the vaccination debate. ;)
