Yes, they do sleep more than humans. In a controlled environment most dogs will sleep 12 to 18 hours a day depending on age, breed, diet, surroundings, and activity. Dogs also usually do not sleep for long periods of time, but instead take many short naps.

Domesticated dogs sleep considerably more than working dogs, and dogs who are left at home alone a lot sleep more than dogs with more active lives. A poor diet or lack of exercise commonly cause a dog to sleep a lot.

Dogs have similar sleep phases to humans. They go through REM and slow wave sleep, but they have the ability to become awake and alert very quickly and fall back asleep quickly.

According to an article at craftersbarn.com if you count all the hours that dogs nap, sleep, it totals 14 hours. And the there's no findings yet on why dogs sleep so much. But there's a possibility that frequent waking up which they usually do can cause this longer sleep.

Dogs also sleep like humans.

------quote-----
Dogs have the same sleep patterns as humans. When your dog first goes to sleep, he enters the slow wave or quiet phase of sleep. He lies still and is oblivious to his surroundings. His breathing slows, his blood pressure and body temperature drop, and his heart rate decreases.

After about ten minutes, your dog enters the rapid eye movement (REM) or active stage of sleep. He rolls his eyes under his closed lids, he may bark or whine, or may jerk his legs. During this stage, the brain activity is similar to that seen during the dreaming sleep of humans, and is evidence that dogs have dreams.

Yup... dogs do sleep more than humans...and i can definitely say this from the example of my own dog.....
God...he sleeps so much ..actually does what we call ' lazing around ' . If calculated the time he sleeps, out of 24 hours , my dog sleeps for about 12 to 13 hours maximum during day.
However, he wakes up frequently at the slightest of the sounds made..even if a pin drops.. and thats the reason why i love him and really dont mind his lazing around.
I dunno whether dogs sleep more b'coz we dont feed them with caffeine but they surely sleep more during day time b'coz they are usually awake during the night.
Actually..its good we dont feed our dogs with caffeine ( atleast i don't ) or even they'll get addicted to it and remain wide awake even during the day time thereby barking and making us feel regretting keeping them.
