Most moles are not dangerous, and the removal of a benign mole could lead to scarring which might be more unattractive than the mole itself. Congenital moles are more likely to become cancerous than mole which develop later in life (see first link). Skin cancers or precancerous moles usually have distinctive features (see second and third links for images) and need to be treated as soon as possible. A biopsy of the mole is the standard test for the presence of cancer, and treatment depends on the type of cells found in the biopsy.

It can be for several reasons:

A mole can potentially develop into cancer. Moles should not exceed 6 mm, nor change colors. If it is not in a circular shape or similar, then it could be dangerous as well.

So basically, it can be dangerous (though it probably won't) so if you have the extra money or really care about your health, you may want to get it removed.

In case of doubt, always let your doctor have a look at it.

My GP told me that, when you have a mole in a place where it rubs against something all the time or gets cut from time to time, they advice to remove it as a precaution because it may be triggered to develop into cancer.

I have one on my face that I cut from time to time when shaving, that appears to be risky. Also under bra straps and the likes, it may be questionable.
