Just like most disorders it is thought to be a combination of environmental and some genetic/biological factors. Most people talk about and focus on the environmental factors.

Here is an article link talking about genetic factors and a few abstracts to other studies and articles completed on this topic regarding genetic factors found.

Good points.

The NIH website offers various information on this topic. Their main entry on MedlinePlus on bulimia states: "According to the National Institutes of Health: "The exact cause of bulimia is unknown. Genetic, psychological, trauma, family, society, or cultural factors may play a role. Bulimia is likely due to more than one factor."

I do not believe that it is genetic. I think environment is the cause of this disease. Society as a whole plays a huge part in people thinking that being skinny is the only way to be. It's sad that people believe that, but it's all over tv, movies, and magazines, so unfortunately a lot of young people don't know any better because they have nothing else to compare it to.
