Antibiotics are not necessarily the best way to treat strep throat, but they are a good idea. Though if they stop infection from spreading, then I consider them the best method. Is that confusing? What I mean is you don't need antibiotics to cure strep throat, but I prefer to take them.

"Strep throat will go away in 3 to 7 days with or without treatment. Doctors usually treat strep throat with antibiotics even though they may not make you well faster. Antibiotics shorten the time you are able to spread the disease to others (are contagious) and lower the risk of spreading the infection to other parts of your body." --WebMD.com

However...

"The only known way to prevent rheumatic fever is to treat strep throat infections or scarlet fever promptly with a full course of appropriate antibiotics." -- The MayoClinic Staff.
