Is a bloody nose from only one nostril typical?

I've been getting bloody noses but only from my right nostril. I'm not looking for a deep medical explanation, although some suggestions as to why this might be happening would be great, but more so I just want to know if when you or someone you know has had a bloody nose is it from one or both nostrils? My doctor doesn't seem concerned, as they happen infrequently, however they seem very random. In fact I got one in the middle of the night recently and have no clue why. Should I pursue this with my doctor?

I had a really really really really bad problem with nose bleeds all through out my childhood and adolescence. They normally always were in my right nostril as well. I haven't had a problem since I was a senior in high school, though.

These are some reasons why you may be having nosebleeds:
1. Dry nasal membranes
2. Previous trauma to the nose (which was my problem)
3. Medications you may be taking to prevent clotting (a lot of OTC pain medications contain aspirin which is an anti-inflammatory and may cause excess bleeding.. which is why you are told not to take any for a few days before having surgery)
4. A hereditary disease which may cause you to hemorrhage

This is what Estronaut has to say about the single nostril nosebleeders:
"If you have only one nostril going when you get a nose bleed, you may want to consider whether you're playing too harshly with your toys, so to speak; very often, single-nostril bleeds occur through mechanical trauma. In other words, you may be making those thin inner nose membranes unhappy through too much or harsh nose blowing or picking. Dry air is another possibility, since these membranes can dry out and be more prone to cracking. In this case, it may be beneficial to swab the membranes with a thick lubricant, such as petroleum jelly, in order to prevent any further bleeds."

Which that can't obviously bee the case all the time. My problem was I was hit on the right side of my nose when I was about 11 and I had a massive nose bleed and since then I couldn't go a week without getting one. Sometimes they'd happen once a day. Thought it was common for me to get a nose bleed occasionally when I was younger, too. But after that accident, it was ALL the time.

Your trauma probably resulted in a damaged blood vessel, when then leaked easily after nose-blowing or because of dry and cracked mucous membranes. This would cause occasional nosebleeds, all on the same side, and it sounds like the asker is experiencing something similar.

That sounds about right. I went to the doctor once about it and was told if the nosebleeds didn't stop they could go to drastic measures and cauterize the blood vessel in my nose that kept bleeding. When I got nosebleeds, they would last anywhere from a half hour to two hours without clotting and it usually happened about two or three times a week any time of day. I'd wake up some nights and there'd be blood all over my pillow. I said no to cauterization because the thought burning a part of my body.. especially on my face was just scary. I don't care if they'd numb me for it or anything.. its just a terrible thought.

Maybe there is dryness in the one nostril or maybe there is a little sore in the lining of the one nostril that is bleeding. Certtainly I'm not a physician, just a few things that I know can make the nose bleed. Of course any sore in the lining would be seen by a doctor upon examination.

Reason i used to get a one sided bloody nose was from allergies.
So yea for me it is pretty typical.
Also dryness could be to blame. I think it is nasty but when my mom says her nose is dry she puts Carmex up it. Not sure if that is spelled right.
I have woken up with a bloody nostril too before. It scared me. But because I have had them before i did not freak out to mad, I just got up and got tissues and wiped my nose till it stopped which was pretty quick.
My doctor told me people get bloody noses for many reasons on just one side of the nose. For example, blowing your nose to hard or picking at the inside of your nose.

There are some more serious reasons for nose bleeding but I would not jump to conclusions. You have already talked to your doctor which is a good start. If it continues or gets worse, talk to your doctor again about your concerns.

Epistaxis (Nose Bleed) is defined as an acute hemorrhage that can originate from one of three places, the nostril, the nasal cavity, or the nasopharynx. It is classified on the basis of the main site of bleeding. Anterior hemorrhage is the most common site of epistaxis, usually originating from the nasal septum.

Most people have them on one side. I am sure there are some people
that have had a bloody nose on each side at once. You should pursue
it to your doctor because he will know more on what it means.
