If one of my children is sick with the flu, should I keep my other children home?

With all this talk of swine flu going on I am trying not to over react. I don't send my kids to school when sick but being this is a highly contagious virus I worry about sending my 2 school age daughter's to school when my toddler has some symptoms of the flu.

If you live in an area where there have been known cases, like parts of Texas and California, or have reason to think your toddler might have been exposed, it's probably a good idea to keep them all home until you get a confirmation on what your toddler has. Especially if her symptoms are a good match for the H1N1 mosaic virus.

Scientists around the world have been worried for years that the we're long overdue for another pandemic. They thought it might be SARS and it wasn't. They thought it might be H5N1 (avian/bird flu), and it wasn't.

Our great-grandparents' generation could remember the flu pandemic of 1918. They remembered the measures taken then to try to stop the spread of Spanish influenza, and when their own kids got sick, I think they were more likely to keep them out of school (especially prior to antibiotics and vaccines). In the 50's when polio was still a huge problem, pools would close in the summer in areas where there were cases. Officials tried to keep kids from gathering to try to cut down on transmitting the virus, because they didn't have very good ways to fight it.

The thing is, once there is a true pandemic, measures like keeping your entire family home will have to happen. Since the WHO scale is already standing at 5 out of 6, I don't think you're overreacting if you live in an area with known cases.

It always depends on the symptoms, doesn't it ? It's unlikely that your toddler may have swine flu, but at least it's possible. Symptoms are similar to the one of ordinary human flu, they include "fever, lethargy, lack of appetite and coughing. Some people with swine flu also have reported runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea".

I can't tell you to follow any advice given here instead of seeing a doctor, so just go and see him the next few days and let him check your daughters in order to find out if they should or should not go to school. I would say it's alright if you let them go to school as long as they don't show sings of flu, but please ask a doctor first. If it's really swine flu, the whole family may have to stay in hospital for a while or whatever, so your daughters won't go to school then anyway. If you want to play it safe, let them stay at home until you've talked to a doctor.

Hope that was helpful.

Your youngest child could have symptoms of any strain of Flu Virus. Keep the older children away from the youngest child until you find out from the doctor what it is. You could send the children to relatives or friends house for a day or two. If they are all confined in the one house together they will surely pass it on to each other and everyone else in the house. Treat the symptoms. Paracetamol accordingly. plenty of fluids and rest. Ensure the other members of the family keep up their levels of nutrition so as to build up their immunity. If the children are well enough to go to school then allow them to go. If they show any signs or symptoms of the flu (fever, aches and pains, irritability) then keep them at home. Ensure your children are going to a safe place as well and not where there are other people and children who are sick.
