A good example is this polling site that asked a similar question. It's a little rough in its answers, but definitely a debate over which one would be best: http://www.pollpub.com/24-hour-fitness-or-la-fitness.aspx
That said, instead of worrying about which one is better, I suggest going to the ones you would be using most often.
Go to the one closest to your home or job - whichever you would feasibly use the most if you were to join. Most of these gyms usually have trial memberships. Give both of them a shot, in terms of how you would use them as a member (would you go in the morning, during/after work or at night) and find out which one fits your life better.
There are going to be some 24-hour Fitnesses (Fitni?) and some L.A. Fitnesses that are clean and some that are dirty, so check out the one you would use for yourself.

It depends on what you want in a gym. LA Fitness tends to have larger clubs and almost always have certain pieces of equipment that 24 Hour Fitness does not have, I would check them both up and make up my mind, if you don’t need to use the gym in the middle of the night LA Fitness is probably a better choice because they generally replace and repair equipment at a faster pace. And they wont call some little club if it is not, 24 Hour Fitness did this in La Jolla and Horton plaza both are small and very small clubs but they call them “Sport” it is dishonest and because they call them that they charge more money to use them. Oh and not all clubs are not open 24 hours.

I've checked out both, and if you compare LA Fitness on La Cienega vs. 24 Hour Fitness in Hollywood (Arclight), 24 is a better experience. They have way more weight machines, actresses work out there (that's all I'm saying), and there's a sweet bar downstairs. The only drawback, is the parking fee at the Arclight and if you go early, while there are a lot of women, the place is packed.
I suggest checking out bootcamp.

I've been going to 24 Hour Fitness for the past little while and it's been great. I usually go at about 5:30pm after work and its not even that busy, which I think is a really important factor. Their gyms tend to be clean and a friendly staff that isn't too pushy. They basically let you go in and out when you please. I also like how inexpensive their memberships are. You can get some monthly deals for about $30/month or some longer term memberships that are even cheaper. There's a bunch of 24 Hour Fitness Coupons that you can get here.
Another great aspect about them is their Signature Clubs, where a bunch of celebrity athletes like Magic Johnson or Lance Armstrong have opened up specialty clubs that you can go to as well.

Don't know quite as much about LA Fitness but I imagine it'd be tough to be 24 Hour Fitness!
I also put up a video of one of the many awesome classes they have!
