Treatment of poison ivy usually includes washing the area immediately after contact, using wet compresses and taking cool baths, nonprescription antihistamines and calamine lotion. A doctor may prescribe corticosteroid pills, crams, ointments, or shots. You should see your doctor if the rash causes great discomfort that isn't relieved by home treatment, the rash shows sign of infection, the rash covers a very large area of your body, home treatment causes the rash to get worse or to come back after almost disappearing, the rashes occur frequently and you are not sure what is causing them, or your mouth is swollen or you think the rash has spread to your mouth. As a kid I can remember washing my poison ivy with Fels Naptha soap. I remember it helping with the itching. We usually followed with calamine lotion.
