560,000 people died from cancer in 2006, which is down from 2005. I know these figures are from a couple of years ago, but statistics take a long time to gather and my source (below) is only a month old.

Obviously, the cost of new cancer drugs drives the costs way up, but I don't think there are gathered statistics on that.

Also, I'm not sure I can easily find you a figure for drug company profits. However, don't forget that drug companies are always under extraordinary pressure to develop their pipeline and bring drugs to profitability before they go off patent. If the drug companies don't make money, they don't survive and continue to make new drugs.

Does $440 billion sound like an accurate cost for total cancer treatment?

Hi davepamn,

Sorry, I'm really not sure. Are you looking for anything else, like average cost per patient?

Okay, I've found something. Total new cases for 2006 was 1,399,790, so if you divide your $440 billion number by the number of new cases, it works out to almost $315,000 ($314,332.86) per patient.
