(1) Firstly, it depends on how bad you want to get the benefits of what you are excericising regularly (or how scared you are of the dangers of not doing this). Focus on whichever of this is important to you and keep it in front of you always.
(2) Usual visual reminders around the house - like a goal card or (if you are trying to lose weight), a nice piece of clothing that will only fit you if you do lose weight / get in shape and pin it up on your bedroom, impose your facial photo on a body that you want to be like and put it on your fridge etc. Visual reminders engage your subconcious mind and that will help you be in track.
(3) Choose a close friend or family (a well wisher) and have them as an accountability person. You will confide your goals to them and communicate with them regularly if you are doing what you are supposed to or not. Give them the freedom to motivate you / be tough on you if you dont. It's easier to give excuses to yourself but sometime accountability to others help. And on the flip side - avoid listening to people who might discourage you from following your excercise routine.
(4) Find a program (place, type, timing etc) what works best for your lifestyle. If the excercise program you are doing does go well with your lifestyle, you will eventually let it slip.
(5) Dont beat yourself when you miss your goal and stop doing it altogether. Instead pat yourself on the back and reward yourself for hitting your goals whenever you do. Start off with small goals and reward yourself, feel good about hitting them and build on it. If you can do it continously for 21 days, it becomes a habit.

Making exercise a part of what you do every day eventually removes the need for motivation. A mindset that's based in 'temporary' will always leave you struggling. Think about it...do you need to stay 'motivated' to brush your teeth everyday? So do something. ANYTHING, everyday.

Best approach for me is to set myself a goal such as a fun run, cycle race etc. Be sure to share your goal with friends and family. This works really when especially when there is a registration fee. The idea of waisting the registration fee and explaining why you missed the run etc is great motivation.

Most of my clients believe "Motivation precedes Action." Actually, a little action precedes motivation which precedes more action. With a little action, you get the flywheel moving... How do you do this? You can "Reduce the problem to the ridiculous."
My wife once asked me to paint the bathroom. I took a pencil, drew a 3x3 inch square on the wall, and said that, this weekend, I'll paint that square (she DID look at me quite strangely).
That Saturday, I went to the local Home Depot and bought the paint (the color my wife chose), the drop-cloths, the brushes, painter's tape, etc. I brought it all home, put down the cloths, tapes up the edges, stirred the paint... and painted that 3x3 square.
Then I said to myself... well... I might as well continue on. And then I ended up finishing the bathroom.
To "Reduce the problem to the ridiculous" for my weight management clients, I get them to agree to walk to the mailbox and back every morning for their exercise. That's all.
So, you put on your clothes and shoes, then walk to the mailbox. Then you say, well... I have my stuff on, I might as well walk a bit more...
We tend to beat ourselves up so much. If we don't go to the gym or work out for the day, we see ourselves as a failure. By "reducing the problem to the ridiculous", you have small successes and build on that...
Set ridiculously small goals to get that small action.. to motivate... to action.

I bike to work and back in all but the worst weather conditions. The beauty of it is that once I get there, the way back is compulsory, I don't have any other way to get home. The best way to make yourself exercise regularly is to make it a part of your life, the more integral to other parts of your life it is, the more likely you are to stick with it. It also saved quite a bit on gas when prices were still high (and they will rise again as the economy recovers).
