How do I get rid of Vicodin?

I have medication left from dental surgery. I have heard that it is not a good idea to flush it down the toilet because it gets into the ground water, and I also hear that you shouldn't throw it out in the trash. Are there any pharmacy collection programs for prescription pain killers and related substances?

Don't Flush! Says the official government guidelines on proper disposal of prescription drugs. Unless of course the label or patient instructions specifically tell you to do so.

http://www.whitehousedrugpolicy.gov/publications/pdf/prescrip_disposal.pdf

These guidelines give a number of hints on what you SHOULD do with unused drugs.

My first thought was to return them to a pharmacist, which turns out not to be on the official guideline, but perfectly acceptable according to several other reputable sources, including this Washington Post story that actually mentions Vicodin left over from root canals.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/05/01/AR2009050103243.html

Between these sources, you should be able to determine a satisfactory resolution.

The best thing to do is find out what is in your area. I would start with your doctor's office, if nothing else they should be able to discard it with their bio-hazard materials.

calling your dr office is a good Idea , but if you still can not get an answer I would call the Pharmacy where I got my RX from , they would probably have a good Idea of what to do.

There are a few things you can do, take the meds back to your dentist, to your local pharmacy, (make sure you give them to a pharmacist) or you can also take them to any hospital's ER. They will all make sure they are disposed of properly.

This is unorthodox, but you might want to consider keeping it. I had surgery and a prescription for Vicodin. After I didn't need it for the pain any more, I didn't know what to do with it. There were only about 5 pills left. So I left it in the medicine cabinet and basically forgot about it. Since then, and before the expiration date, I started having sinus migraines, out of nowhere. I made a doctor's appointment, but he couldn't see me for a couple of days. The pain was excruciating and Advil didn't cut it. Hours later, in desperation, I took one of my leftover Vicodin and that did the trick. I was careful not to abuse it, but it pulled me through until I could go see my ENT. Vicodin is not specific to one type of pain - it targets all pain. I am VERY glad I kept the leftovers, because they really saved me during a very agonizing time. Keep in mind, this is just my personal experience and not official medical advice.

Depending on how strapped you are for cash.......Just kidding....I would keep it, if you ever throw your back out or smash the crap out of your foot or something I would just take it.

It wont hurt you to keep it in your house (if you have kids I would lock it in a lock box) if something happens you always have that option.

If you MUST get rid of it, take it to your doctor, or to a pharmacy (heck I am sure the police would even take it), tell them you dont need them and I am sure they will take care of them for you...

Here I was being so PC about my answer. Guess I have a lot to learn about Mahalo. Your first paragraph is spot on, and a whole lot more entertaining than my response!

As a physician, I don't want patients bringing me back unused Vicodin. Just keep em around in case you bang up your knee or something. If you bring them back to me, I have to dispose of them in some kind of official way that is way more headache than I want.

Wow, I think any doctor's office would be happier to get them back than to have them sold on the street to fuel people's addictions or have some animal eat them out of a trash bag.
Besides, it wouldn't be the doctor that would deal with it, it'd just be the receptionist that would chuck it in the hazardous/bioharzard box. What is that, 2 seconds out of the way? I wouldn't call that "a headache", it's not like it takes all afternoon to throw something in a bin.

If they get sold on the street, it is not my fault. If I write a script for a legit reason for a patient and they sell them on the street, they are doing the wrong, not me. Vicodin is not a biohazard. Its tylenol and narcotic, not nuclear waste.

Listen, in my opinion you are all making this a much bigger deal than it is. Chuck them in the fireplace if you're that worried about it.

Your right, flushing it down the toilet is HORRIBLE and I don't understand why people think it would be ok, considering that goes into the plant and into our drinking water. when it goes to the landfill and gets wet, it runs into the ground water.
You can drop off old medication at any pharmacy or doctors office and ask them to put it in with their hazardous materials. All of them will have it for expired medications and samples and returns, pills they drop when counting, things like that. You can also drop it off at any hazardous waste facility in your city, same as where you go to drop off paint and batteries, though you'll likely be in for a longer wait there. Any pharmacy will accept it, no problem!
