I just answered a similar question. Here was my answer

Make some behavioral changes and be consistent with these changes

A consistent, relaxing routine before bed sends a signal to your brain that it is time to wind down, making it easier to fall asleep.

Start by keeping a consistent bedtime as much as possible. Then, think about what relaxes you. It might be a warm bath, soft music or some quiet reading. Relaxation techniques, such as yoga, visualization or muscle relaxation not only tell your body it is time for sleep but also help relieve anxiety.

Avoid bright light or activities which cause stress and anxiety.

If it is something that you are worried about that is keeping you up at night you will make much more progress if you address that underlying issue. If not it will continue to fester and will cause other problems. Anxiety won't get better on its own.

Valerian root helps promote a deep sleep. Melatonin helps you feel naturally drowsy and Ambien CR helps you fall asleep and stay asleep. I use ambien and it works great!

Here you go . . .
Of the below I enjoy meditation and herbal tea to relax.

Preventive Care:

The following lifestyle changes can help prevent insomnia:

* Exercising regularly -- best when done before dinner. Exercise should not be done too close to bedtime because it can cause restlessness.
* Avoiding caffeine (especially after noon) and nicotine.
* Getting regular exposure to late afternoon sun. This helps to stimulate release of melatonin to regulate circadian rhythm.
* Practicing stress reduction techniques, such as yoga, meditation, or deep relaxation.
* Early treatment of insomnia may also help prevent psychiatric disorders, such as depression.
