I had read that the physiological addiction lasts for three days, and that after that it is all mental. I decided that if that was true, then I could surely last three days, and I was determined that the mental part would not cause me to start again. So I did it cold turkey.

What was your reason to quit smoking?

Well, beside the fact that I was coughing my lungs out, the cost was getting higher and higher and my income was getting lower and lower. Eventually, I switched from carton cigarettes to rolling my own from a can of Buglar. Then I finally quit.

I went from two packs of menthols a day, down to one and a half packs a day.

From there, I went down to a pack a day. After that, I managed to refrain from lighting up until I got down to half a pack a day. By that time, about a month had gone by, and slowly I was able to get down to 4 a day, then 3 a day, then 2 a day until I could finally say "you know, I don't need these anymore". That was 12 years ago.

Now mind you, I still enjoy the once a year cigar...but that's about it now.

How did you overcome your feeling of anxiety? Did you eat grapefruit to reduce the craving?

I was working a high stress job, and didn't really notice any. Worrying about being sniped / shot at on the job made the anxiety from wanting a cigarette tame.

I was a Marboro Methol light smoker for 10 years. Pack a day habit. It was easy for me only because the decision was made for me. I had wanted to quit for a while. I was ready to settle down with my girlfriend and at 27 years old, I felt the time to quit was coming. I always told myself I'd NEVER smoke past 30.

But what made it easy for me was that the hospital I work at became a "smoke free facility" back in November. So when that day came, I figured if I'm gonna quit when I'm at work, I should just quit completely. And I did. I went to the tobacco quit center at the hospital and they gave me the patch and gum (which I never needed).

The first few days it was tough, but anytime I got the crave I just told myself "there's no way you're giving in so just forget about it". And then I'd chew a piece of gum or suck on a mint.

It's now been almost 7 months and even though I do miss smoking, I don't feel like I NEED it like I used to. It's a good feeling to know that I conquered this thing that had such a hold on me for so long...good luck to you!
