I have been to a chiropractor a number of times over the years for adjustments. The first time was years ago, visiting my ex's doctor. This was the worst thing ever. I have military neck, which is a condition in which the spine of the neck is straight rather than curved. This chiro literally hammered my neck like karate chops which was excruciating. None the less I never went back to him again. Then at one point I was doing some work through a chiropractor's office. At one point this doctor had a friend of his visiting who was also a chiro. The one chiro was way too gentle, while the other didn't seem to be rough enough. When I subsequently moved and went to a new chiro, he wasn't that bad at all and really helped my spine and neck. I would definately have to say that you have to see which one has the technique that works well for you. Like what I have experienced, you might find one that is too rough, while another that is too gentle and isn't good enough. You basically have to find one that works well for you. Where I am now I have only visited one for massages, as I haven't felt the need for any other treatments at this point.

I had a series of treatments for back pain by a chiropractor a number of years ago, and they helped a great deal. Some of the manipulations were uncomfortable for a moment, but the results were well worth it.

If you're considering chiropractic treatment, be careful. Some chiropractors, like the one I saw, confine their practice to treatment of back pain using scientifically sound and conservative (nonsurgical) modalities such as musculoskeletal manipulation, massage, ultrasound, etc. Many, however, rely on nonscientific theories implicating spine "subluxations" as the cause for just about any health problem you can name. For further information on what to look for when choosing a chiropractor, the following is an excellent source:

I would make one update to this article: Acupuncture is considered safe if done using proper technique, and studies have shown that it is effective in treating low back pain. Note, though, that simulated acupuncture was also effective, so this may be a placebo effect (which is nonetheless real).
