I had a series of treatments for back pain by a chiropractor a number of years ago, and they helped a great deal. Some of the manipulations were uncomfortable for a moment, but the results were well worth it. If you're considering chiropractic treatment, be careful. Some chiropractors, like the one I saw, confine their practice to treatment of back pain using scientifically sound and conservative (nonsurgical) modalities such as musculoskeletal manipulation, massage, ultrasound, etc. Many, however, rely on nonscientific theories implicating spine "subluxations" as the cause for just about any health problem you can name. For further information on what to look for when choosing a chiropractor, the following is an excellent source:

I would make one update to this article: Acupuncture is considered safe if done using proper technique, and studies have shown that it is effective in treating low back pain. Note, though, that simulated acupuncture was also effective, so this may be a placebo effect (which is nonetheless real).
