I think depending on the circumstances that there may not be an effect, but most medications are not recommended in newborns because of their systems not always being fully developed, so there is more chance of liver/kidney problems as well as it being harder to judge side effects in a non-mobile infant.

zyrtec is NOT recommended for children under the age of 6 months, but if a doctor prescribes it and adjusts the dose accordingly it could be very helpful in the management of allergy processes. It must be kept in mind that in pediatric patients, the clearance and bio availability of this medication is vastly different than in adults. this should be figured in dosing.

A good answer, but a primary source would be helpful, such as the official prescribing information:

http://www.rxlist.com/zyrtec-drug.htm

Instructions for pediatric use of Zyrtec (cetirizine) are on page 4 and include the following: "The safety and effectiveness of cetirizine in pediatric patients under the age of 6 months have not been established."
