Does melatonin have a paradoxical effect when taken with alcohol?

I take melatonin sometimes to help me sleep. My husband tried it for the first time two nights ago, except he had been drinking that night as well. He said it KEPT him awake most of the night, saying it felt as if he had taken a stimulant of some sort. Do you think it was the alcohol that caused the melatonin to effect him this way? Or does he just have a different body chemistry than most people?

I am not a doctor and this is my personal experience.

I do have considerable experience with both melatonin and alcohol taken both together and separate.

I use melatonin a couple of times a month now and have been doing this for over a year now. I have always been pleased with the results. I get good sleep with no sleepy after effects in the morning like I would get with other sleep aids.

I no longer use alcohol but I do have bright and clear memories of using the alcohol in combination with melatonin and getting the exact opposite effect as your husband. In my experience the combination of the two has resulted in a deep, coma-like sleep that resulted in one heck of a hangover the next day.

Again I am not a health professional or a doctor and have never even consulted a doctor regarding the use of melatonin or the combination of melatonin and alcohol. The above statements are of a personal experience only.

Thank you. Personal experience is the most reliable experience. I don't drink at all and have no desire to drink, so I definitely didn't want to try this on myself to experiment. Thanks!

Your welcome @samid
I don't know if this will be additionally helpful but I would like to add that my usual dosage of melatonin now is 3mg, at the time I was using it in combination with alcohol I was taking 5mg at a time.

I had a bottle from a few years ago that was 3 mg and it said to take one or two tablets at bedtime. It was an old bottle someone gave me, so the potency was probably low. The new bottle I just bought (as I didn't use it for two years or so) is also 3 mg tablets and it says to only take one tablet at bedtime, but I've been taking two since and, I have to say, I'm really, really drowsy today. I've been sleeping well, but having a hard time snapping out of it in the daytime. I think I'll start using one tablet again.

I think you pretty much answered my question, so I'm going to go ahead and give you best answer. I don't think anymore answers are needed.
