He is out of the booth indefinitely as he is recovering from lung cancer surgery from last year. Since surgery, he has suffer pneumonia and battled an infection, and he simply needs time off to focus on getting to a point where he is fully recovered. He was a smoker, and hopes that "my bout with cancer will reinforce the dangers of smoking to every member of Red Sox Nation, especially children.”

He added he’ll be back in time “to take the team all the way to the 2009 World Series."

As reported by several news outlets (including USA Today) he had lung cancer. He is
