That "hair of the dog" might make you feel better initially, but it only adds to the effects of the alcohol previously consumed, eventually worsening and prolonging the hangover. Hangovers are still not fully understood, and the aftereffects of ethanol on the body are complex. Once you have a hangover, though, the best treatment is time; your body will eventually metabolize the ethanol and its byproducts. Some studies suggest that fructose may relieve hangover symptoms, and drinking fruit juice also helps treat the dehydration often associated with alcohol consumption. Analgesics can be used for headache, but avoid acetaminophen (Tylenol, paracetamol) since alcohol increases its toxicity to the liver.
