That all depends on what you are covering your mouth with, and whether you are covering your nose as well! If you are covering your nose and mouth with an anti-viral mask, then it will help. If you are covering your mouth only, then you are still expelling the virus from your nose. If you cover your mouth with your hand, then you may be inhibiting or redirecting the spray pattern, but now your hands are covered with viral particles which you will spread unless you immediately scrub up. A scrub nurse told me she was taught to sneeze into the neck of her t-shirt -- that way her hands were not contaminated, and she had blocked the spray of particles into the air.

Covering your mouth does aid in spreading germs. Also, washing hands. In fact, not washing your hands spreads germs to store shopping carts, doors and more. If everyone practiced this, we'd all be a lot healthier. :)

Providing that tissues are disposed of and this is the most important, hands are washed and/or properly sanitized. I work in a hospital and we stress the importance of covering up, especially if the illness can be spread through droplets. Believe it or not, something this simple does aid in prevention of spreading germs. However, the mouth and nose should be covered by the inner elbow, not the hands except when necessary. This is because our hands touch everything and a lot of people neglect washing.
