Iodine is essential for the production of thyroid hormones, but it is potentially hazardous in large doses. Insufficient iodine in the diet can lead to goiters and hypothyroidism in adults, but too much iodine carries risks of its own, including the possibility of autoimmune destruction of the thyroid gland. If you're concerned about your thyroid function, see your doctor. Simple blood tests can evaluate for thyroid hormone and iodine levels if necessary.
