Does anyone know if I have to remove all my piercings for a tonsillectomy?

I would inform your doctor of all your piercing and remove whatever is requested. Body piercing can interfere with emergency medical care. While tonsillectomies are a semi-routine procedure, any medical procedure runs the risk of complications. For example, if you were to go into cardiac arrest (unlikely but always a possibility with anesthesia), piercings could reduce the effectiveness of the defibrillator as metal piercings can divert the flow of electricity. usually, only the ones on the face and ears. ask if they'd let you wear a plastic retainer. what piercing is it you want to leave in?

Technically hospitals and outpatient centers can't make you remove any piercings. If they say they won't do the procedure without the piercing removed then you could say the piercing has religious meaning and they probably won't press the issue. Really, you should only have issues if your piercing is on your tonsils anyways....

the reason they ask for a person to remove their jewelry is mainly for safety of the patient....wouldn't want a captive bead for a labret to be knocked into someone's throat during surgery..........and they also don't want to be responsible for the cost of belongings should anything be lost.

it's easier to just remove things and replace them when out of the recovery area.

I guess you have to. When my daughter got appendix removed, they asked to remove the earrings.
