Medical treatment for narcolepsy is very different for each individual based on their specific symptoms and how they respond to treatment. It can take months to tailor a successful treatment program to an individual.

The main treatment of the excessive daytime sleepiness is some type of central nervous system stimulant such as methylphenidate, racemic - amphetamine, dextroamphetamine, and methamphetamine, or modafinil. Another drug that is used is atomoxetine, a non-stimulant and Norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (NRI), that has little or no abuse potential. Planned regular short naps may reduce the need for medications as well.
