Treatment for a strain involves taking a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory such as aspirin or ibuprofen. RICE- rest, ice, compression, and elevation needs to be done. You can wrap ice around a towel and keep it on the area for no more than 20 minutes at a time. If this brings no relief in 24 hours time, you should see a doctor for an evaluation. If however you heard a popping sound, can't walk, or there is significant swelling, pain, or fever, you should make a trip to the ER.
