I'm hardwired as a night owl, so, given the choice and if I didn't have responsibilities, I'd sleep from about 8am to 4pm. Even on my off days, I tend to stay up until 2am or so, even if I have to be to work by 8am.

Working nights for too many years, combined with 24 / 7 business in Chicago mean that I can function just as well at night as most people do during the day. Things were also much easier when I used to patrol the Chicago streets at night - you can get anywhere in the city quick since traffic is nil.

I tend to get about 7+ hours of sleep before my body will wake on its' own. An army sergeant taught me a trick just out of high school to make sure you sleep well at night (other than the physical training): Don't eat or drink anything 5 hours before your intended bedtime. If you do, your body wants to process it, and you'll probably need to use the restroom - and have problems getting back to sleep.
Asker's Rating:
• Interesting, you can affect sleep by eating within five hours of sleep. I never thought about how eat could disrupt sleep.

When I'm not working, I like to stay up late and sleep later. However, I don't often get to do that because I have to get up at 6am for work. I aim to get 7 hours of sleep a night because I feel better with 7 hours than 8 hours.

I guess you could say that I sleep in. I stay up late at night- usually I don't go to bed until 8:00 in the morning. My husband works the night shift, and I like to be up when he's up, and sleep when he's sleeping.

Yes I do get a full 8 hours of sleep :D

I get 8-9 hours of sleep, but I don't get it when most other people do. I actually like to get up early, but I often don't get home from my kids' evening activities until well after 9 p.m. So I normally go to bed between 10 and 11 (so our family feels like we've had an evening) and get up between 8 and 9.

I'm a morning person. I tend to be most creative and productive in the morning. It must come from commuting into Silicon Valley VERY early to beat all the traffic.

I try to get a straight eight, but, sometimes I have late clients and still have to get up, exercise, and get the kids to school.

For me it depends on how good a nights sleep I got, and when I went to bed. I usually go to bed between 11:30pm and 12:00 midnight. If I sleep good, then I usually fall asleep about 1am and get up at 7am, so 6 hours of sleep.
Sometimes I suffer from gas or allergies. That means I have to get up and take medicine. This usually results in me sleeping at about 2am and getting up at 8 to 8:30am. Sometimes I have to get up and use the bathroom. This will kick my get up time back a half hour to 45 minutes.
I have dystonia which causes my natural rhythm to fluctuate and this forces me to take naps at odd times, like 8pm. When this is severe, I am likely to stay up very late, like 3 or 4 or even 5am. When this happens, I might get up at 9, 10 or even 11am.
If I get 6 straight hours of sleep during the night, I consider that a very good night.

I work nights, 7p-7a, so on my working nights, I stay up until at least 8AM and then wake anytime between 11 AM and 3 PM. I almost never get 8 hours of sleep, and am lucky to get between 6 and 7. On my nights off, depending on if I can make myself stay up the morning after a 12 hour shift, I may go to bed early that evening or I may sleep all day and be up all night. I don't have a regular pattern, which I know isn't good for me, but hey! Gotta love being a night nurse!
