I've always had some issues with stress and anxiety, and often will notice, while just hanging out at home, that I am sort of tense and bottled-up for no reason.

So when I found out my old college roommate had a "white noise" recording that was supposed to be soothing, I was eager to try it. Unfortunately, it didn't really do anything for me in terms of stress relief. My mind would drift around like usual while the sounds were playing, and I was just as likely to stumble across something that would make me feel tense or on edge, particularly if I already felt that way before the sound began.

HOWEVER, the device was really useful for falling asleep, particularly if (as was often the case in Westwood) it was loud outside. White noise is great for blocking out loud, obnoxious noise in the distance...The constant, but not unpleasant, sound definitely helped me when I had to go to bed earlier than those around me.

This Consumer Reports article seems to back up the contention:

If your goal is getting more sleep, I'd recommend it. But it did very little to relieve my stress.

I have a noise machine that I use to help me sleep. It includes white noise, rain, ocean waves, etc. It helps me relax by concentrating on the noise and not thinking about other things. It might help you, they are cheap. Worth a try!

I have never tried one of these machines. It is supposed to mask unwanted noises helping to ensure that you get enough sleep every night. It is also said that you can use it in your office for confidentiality and concentration. I really don't know if it will help with stress but I guess getting more sleep is always a sure way to help reduce stress.

I would suggest trying it before you buy it! How? Chris Pirillo did a video on it and in that video he suggested a website where you can hear white noise for free. Use it, test it out and see if it helps.

The website to try

Also, these devices are also supposed to be able to play random noises like a rushing waterfall, a wind blowing etc. You can always get these sounds on the internet and try them out. Some places even sell them on cd. ( amazon.com has them)

I think I will try the simplynoise website myself and see if it works for me.

I'm sure it depends on the perosn. Mine loowers my pulse and blood pressure. I breathe more slowly and more deeply. Also, I concentrate better while reading or working...or if i'm lying down, I often fall asleep. I have a brookstone model that runs on batteries or AC. Its the travel size with carrying case. 4 Relax modes; 4 Sleep Modes. 1 Custom Mode. Pure bliss.
