According to the Mayo Clinic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayo_Clinic) there is no evidence that protein shakes help with weight loss.

The Medifast diet is very capable. I can say from experience that we average 2-4 lbs per week with women and 3-5 lbs per week with men.
Many of the meals are shakes and there is a variety of foods with the plan. It is scientifically balanced and the weight loss is real. Done along with a support system the weight loss can be long term and the associated lifestyle changes are much easier to teach some one who has gotten to their ideal weight and wants to stay that way.
Not all protein shakes are created equal and that is a great deal about what that article from Mayo is about. However it was not in the spirit of your question as I read it. Yes there are meal replacement shakes that can assist in your weight loss

Although protein shakes generally aren't harmful, you shouldn't expect them to take the weight off for you. Remember, protein contains calories. So consuming too much protein can actually make losing weight more difficult.
Weight loss is achieved by controlling your calorie intake and increasing the number of calories you burn through physical activity. So you have already made two very positive changes.
