Can migraines be triggered by flashing lights or video, like seizures are?

I get ocular migraines, which means my eyes see flashes before I get migraines. The other day I was watching a video, and all of a sudden got a huge migraine.

I don't know if the video was a result of the migraine or not. But it got me to wondering if migraines can be triggered by video or light, in a similar way to seizures.

There are a variety of known triggers for migraines including bright lights or sounds. Considering the nature of your aura (not in the new-age sense) it wouldn't be surprising.

It's interesting that you mention ocular migraines as they are a subset of acephalgic migraines where sufferers experience the aura but not the headache and are also more prone to standard migraines without the aura phase. Did you experience the aura phase in this instance with the headache or just the headache?

Disclaimer: I am by no means a doctor - just a friend of a sufferer trying to point you to more information.

Good Luck!

I know bright light certainly intensifies my own migraines. I also had to switch my eye glass prescription to a less strong one because sitting at a computer monitor all day with with a higher prescription(IE the correct prescription if I was outside or driving a car for instance) was giving migraines nearly daily. Change my prescription now I don't get them at all(At least not from staring at a computer screen all day.).

So knowing that I'm going to bet it can.

Mine are sometimes. I have to have an overload of sources. I can get a migraine if: I haven't been eating carefully, and I'm either too hot/having a lot of stress and/or there is a weather front approaching, causing a rapid change in barometric pressure, and then I drive through an area where sunlight and shade alternate (like driving along a tree-lined road). Or sometimes, florescent lights that are flickering and about to burn out will do it, if some of the other triggers are there. For me, it's always several things at once that do it.  I also have hormonal triggers.

As long as I eat right for me, I don't get many or severe migraines.

Thanks for your answer. My migraines also seem to be worse when I have an "overload of sources" which is why college was such a migraine-prone time for me.

I haven't really been able to find one "smoking gun" trigger, it's usually a lot of little stuff. So thanks for your answer backing up my thoughts in that area.

I'm glad to help! I do find that taking Natural Vitality's Natural Calm magnesium helps and can even chase a migraine that's already in progress.
