Of course, you can drink alcohol when you have a cold. Many of the cold and decongestant liquid medicine contains alcohol, including Nyquil, which actually contains quite a bit of alcohol compared to some medicines.

However, keep in mind a couple of thing - if you're taking a medication that can make you drowsy, alcohol consumption while taking that medicine can make the drowsiness worse, and can actually risk your life.

Another thing to consider is that when you have a cold, you're supposed to drink lots of liquids, fluids, to keep your body hydrated while it's fighting off a fever and other nasty germs. If you do drink alcohol while you're sick, you should drink one glass of water to ever glass of alcohol, or mix your alcohol with plenty of juice.

Never mix alcohol with Benadryl or other allergy medicine, because that can cause a bad reaction and there are some people who have gone to sleep and never woken up after mixing the two. Remember, medication and alcohol don't mix - read even the bottles of Tylenol and Advil and you'll see alcohol warnings saying not to take them if you drink more than three alcoholic beverages per day. It can destroy your liver and kidneys.

So the short answer - yes, you can drink alcohol while you have a cold, but all things in moderation, don't mix alcohol with medication, and drink plenty of fluids while sick.

And as always, consult your doctor if you have any serious questions about your health.

Alcohol will dehydrate and deplete you of your body with Vitamin B.

No it isn't a good idea. Your body is already burdened with an overload of toxins to begin with (which is why your sick), and drinking alcohol would only make it that much harder for your liver to do its job.

I'll completely agree with this answer. Although technically, provided you're NOT taking any cold medicine, drinking is as safe as usual, it's still not a bright idea.

I once had a college-era roommate guy who swore that when you have a cold you should "purify by alcohol", and that the alcohol would kill the germs. It was a worthwhile experiment....but no, it didn't help. Although it did clear my sinuses and not make me care so much about my cough....still not a good idea.

There are several things you should do to make sure that your body has the required immunological resistance to cold and flu virus infections. First you should avoid both smoking and drinking. Drinking dehydrates the body.

One of the numerous ways to fight off colds is to keep your body hydrated.

Secondly, alcohol consumption harms the body's immune system in two ways:
1.It causes an overall nutritional deficiency, depriving the body of valuable immune- boosting nutrients.
2. Alcohol, like sugar, consumed in excess, reduces the ability of white cells to kill germs. High doses of alcohol suppress the ability of the white blood cells to multiply, inhibit the action of killer white cells on cancer cells, and lessen the ability of macrophages to produce tumour necrosis factors.

You need to drink three or more drinks to cause the damage. And further damage is caused by increased alcohol consumption. However, if you drink enough to get intoxicated, you can cause negative immune system effects.

You need to carefully try out all of those Mahalo How-To's on making cocktails !! Maybe only one a day, or every other day......

My old officemate told me "no self-respecting cold will stay in your body if you take a hot bath and a shot of Jack." I didn't try it, but he swears it works. If it were me, I'd stick to tea, water and juice, to get plenty of fluids. But if the bath/Jack combo works, please let me know :)
