I have dystonia and my mother and her sister suffer from dysphonia which is dystonia of the vocal cords. (I have this too). The most worrisome thing is that my aunt has dementia. She is about 68. I really worry about this too.
The doctors don't know what is wrong, they only know the symptoms. I was given some drugs at first and I took them for about a year, but they did not help.
At one point, I had a root canal and the dentist gave me a prescription of vicodin (hydrocordone/5mg and APAP/500mg) To my surprise this controlled my shakes much better than the drugs the doctor gave me. I convince my own doctor to give a prescription. I have been taking this for a few years now. I get thirty tabs and cut them in half. I take one half tab on Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday. This lasts me a little over 90 days.
I think that the reason that your mother rests her head to one side is that the muscles on that side are pulling her head that way. My eyelids would stay shut if not for the botox that I take every 90 days. The botox weakens the muscles so that they don't pull my eyelids shut. I'm not sure, but botox in the muscles of your mothers neck may relax them. YOU NEED TO SEE A NEUROLOGIST THAT HAS EXPERIENCE WITH DYSTONIA.
I suffered for eight years while the doctors at Kaiser told me that it was all in my mind. Not until I saw a neurologist who had experience with dystonia did I get help.

Have lived with it for decades now.

Its nice to hear from someone that deals with dystonia. My mom has been in a state of ??? for about 6 months. She is in a nursing home and the doctor has the nurses do therapy on her daily and she wears a brace, which she hates. As soon as the brace is off, her head goes back to the right. I will confer with a neurologist regarding her state of health.

Thank you
