The most common appendicitis symptom is pain, which usually starts around the navel and eventually moves to the right lower abdomen. The exact location of the pain can differ due to individual variation in the position of the appendix. Pressure over the area makes the pain worse, and sudden release of pressure can cause severe pain (rebound tenderness). Coughing, walking, or other movements can worsen the pain as well. Other symptoms associated with appendicitis include nausea, loss of appetite, fever, abdominal swelling, and constipation or diarrhea.

Early stages of appendicitis may resolve on their own without treatment. However, if appendicitis progresses to the point that the appendix ruptures, it can be fatal, and surgical removal of the appendix is the standard treatment for any diagnosed case of appendicitis.
