Have you used http://www.reputationdefender.com - are they worth using, or is it all hype? Positive or negative results for you?

I'm interested in the idea of reputation management, but I'm just not sure that it can really be done in the current internet environment. Have you used http://www.reputationdefender.com or another service? Did you try to do it yourself? Was it worthwhile? How did it work for you?

Hi Russ,

I have personally used Reputation Defender since 2006. I use their MyEdge service to help maintain my virtually image for both myself and my organization.

I was a victim of Internet Defamation and won a landmark case in Florida with a jury verdict of over $11M - a verdict that sent a loud message. I was literally destroyed online - the first 3 pages of my Google were filled with slime, lies, and twisted truths.

Although I was vindicated legally, my online presence was still tarnished badly. I had to close my office and now work from my home. I was introduced to Reputation Defender after the trial - and 3 months after that, I was alive virtually again! My business came back and most important, I felt like I was human again.

I am not paid by ReputationDefender, I do not receive any referral fees from them, and I don't sponsor them - I am simply a grateful client.

You can read more about my story in my recently released book "Google Bomb!" The Untold Story of How the $11.3M Verdict Changed the Way We Use the Internet. http://www.googlebombbook.com

This sounds like a huge scam. Some guy payed a decent amount of money for a Dr. Phil plug and is making bank on it. I doubt they can really do anything to help.

I think they call it irony.

The fact that you search for reputationdefender.com and this source - with disparaging remarks about Reputation Defender (regardless of if they are true or not) - appears in the top ten, should tell you that it apparently doesn't work.

But, I am sure they'd be happy to take your money.

Reputation Defender is a company built to protect people from any harmful and damaging statements found online by eliminating said comments or statements online. The company's origin can be traced way back on year 2006, when Michael Fertik organized the corporation at Louisville, Kentucky. It's line-up of services include MyReputation, MyChild, MyPrivacy and MyEdge.

The company's procedure involves searching information online assisted by a program termed as searchbot, this program identifies domains that contain the damaging statements. After which they will formally communicate with owners of the domain sites, requesting them to delete such statements. If these moves is futile, it will send a series of strongly worded letter, thus if no positive response is found, said case is forwarded to an attorney that specializes in this types of situations.

Accordingly, "BBB processed a total of 9 complaints about ReputationDefender, Inc. in the last 36 months, our standard reporting period. Of the total of 9 complaints closed in 36 months, 8 were closed in the last year."

I also used http://www.rexxfield.com/. They're the only choice in my opinion. It was totally worth the money and the got the little SOB that was trying to ruin my company. They have a great search engine team as well which repairs the bad comments. Do yourself a favour and at least contact them for info before you waste your money with an untrusted service or small fries who work alone and promise the world but can't deliver.

I've tried them all so I can speak from experience with wasting my own money.

Good luck with your case...

ReputationDefender took $2500 dollars from me. They are a HUGE SCAM and did no work at all that I can see. They gave me a bunch of empty promises and when I asked for my money back they were just rude as can be. Stay away from these Scammers.

Hello, Russ. My sister had serious problems with some online cyberstalker for over a year now. This guy was spreading lies and garbage about her online: on her facebook, myspace, through twitter and even image sharing websites. She had to delete all of her accounts. We haven't tried RD but the guys over at http://www.rexxfield.com/ were able to help us out and deal with this mess. We dealt with Michael Roberts there.

I haven't tried Reputation Defender, but I have successfully repaired the Internet reputation for several of my clients. (Yes, people hire me to solve this problem for them.) Internet reputation repair is possible but very difficult for several reasons. 1) Removing negative posts requires working with two different entities: the content site hosting the negative content, and Google (and other search engines) which cache the negative content and display the results. Without a court order, it can be difficult to get negative content deleted, and even if you have a court order, you will need to work with both the content site and Google separately to have the content removed from the site/cache. If the content site doesn't follow Google's specific process (and they often don't), it can be even more difficult to get Google cached content/links removed. 2) If someone is deliberately slandering you, they can get new negative comments indexed by Google, faster than anyone can get them removed. 3) Negative posts on high Google PR pages can be difficult to push down out of the first page of results.

Despite these challenges, with a deep understanding of SEO, as well as the search engine protocols for requesting link/cache removal, you can usually minimize the negative content in the search engines, even if you can't get the content deleted. This is an art as much as a science, and it does take time and effort before you are likely to see results.

However, for any company to say that they can "guarantee" results is impossible. Most of the time, deleting content from the search engines is not within their control. In this case, the "guarantee" is simply a marketing tool, as, based on their prior history, they know that in a significant percentage of the cases, they can improve the situation, and they may be willing to offer a refund for the rest to help get the business in the first place.

If you would like more information on Internet reputation management, you can contact Mark Bonham at http://www.internexperts.com.

This company is a huge scam. If you don't understand how the internet works, or how reputation defender does business, then you're throwing away money. Generally, you can do what reputation defender does. All they do is send letters to companies asking them to remove the content. They put in removal requests to Google and other search engines. It's basically a concierge service.

You should know that 1) They do not "hack" websites to remove data. They do not employ anyone with technical expertise for defending reputations; 2) Michael Fertik is not a lawyer as far as anyone can tell (he went to Harvard Law School but never passed the bar); 3) he's a serial "start-up" CEO. He's created more business that fail than have succeeded.

Basically, there's not a whole lot that they can do unless the offending parties agree to take down the content that offends you. If they're not willing to work with you or reputation defender, the information stays on the internet.
