Has an African country ever had a female prime minister / president / head of state?

If not, is it the only continent?

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Well, there was Élisabeth Domitién, Prime Minister of the Central African Republic in 1975 and 1976. She was an appointed sidekick of a dictator, but you didn't specify conditions.

There was also, in 1994, Sylvie Kinigi an appointed Prime Minister of Burundi before and during the massacres.

Agathe Uwilingiyimana served as Prime Minister of Rwanda from 18 July 1993 until her death on 7 April 1994 during the genocides there.

There turned out to be others too, so Africa is not a continent with no female Prime Ministers etc.
There are only two continents which have not. Australia has not. (New Zealand has but that's not part of the Australian continent). Second, Antarctica has not. But then, Antarctica has not had a male Prime Minister either. It does have lots of female Emperor Penguins.

Thanks for answering the second part of the question. I guess the Australian continent sometimes gets called Australasia or Oceania to take in all the other nearby nations.

However, what's the "New Source"? Not the one @thekoopabros posted for us I hope!

From what I've found:

-Élisabeth Domitién was Prime Minister of the Central African Republic from 1975-76.
-Carmen Pereira was the acting head of state in Guinea Bissau in 1984.
-Agathe Uwilingiymana was Prime Minister of Rwanda from 1993-94.
-Sylvie Kinigi was Prime Minister of Burundi from 1993-1994
-Mame Madior Boye was Prime Minister of Sénégal from 2001-2002.
-Maria das Neves Ceita Batista de Sousa was Prime Minister of Republic of São Tomé e Príncipé from 2002-03 and 2003-04.
-Luísa Días Diogo was Prime Minister of Moçambique for 2004.
-Maria do Carmo Silveira was Prime Minister of São Tomé e Princípe from 2005-2007
-Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf was President of Liberia in 2006.
-Dr. Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri was the acting president in South Africa in 2008

Before these there were European Prime Ministers from abroad appointed as PM's so I don't know if that counts or not but they are in my link below.

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf

She is the first woman president in Africa, the only woman president ever elected to the office of President in any country in Africa and she is currently the president of Liberia. President Sirleaf ran and lost in 1997 and then ran for president again in 2005 and won, taking office in 2006.
