How to prevent other users accessing hard-disk partitions in xp ? It would be better if they can't see the partitions from their account :)

I am using Windows XP Sp3. I have about 7 partitions. My computer is used commonly by my family and friends. There are two accounts for my computer.
1. Administrator Account
2. Visitor Account ( Not administrator Type )

There are partitions which I don't want other people to access. How can I prevent them accessing it ?

I don't want to put the files in the My Documents and make it private because there is not enough space in C:\ to put all the files. :(

Hi,

There is a software, that you can use to protect and hide your local drives of your hard-disk. The name of the software is "Disk Drive Administrator v3.1".
You can hide, lock and protect your local hard-disk drives, network, Floppy and USB drives. The program lets you protect itself from an unauthorized access by assigning a password that can be requested on each program start. The user interface is also very easy to understand.

You can download it from the following link:

http://www.easy-share.com/1903572844/Disk.Drive.Administrator.v3.1.rar

(note: easy-share.com is a free file sharing website)

After downloading the file, extract it in one folder. Then you will find another zip file. Extract it also in that folder. You will find another zip file. Extract it for the final time and you will get your software and a crack file. After installing the software copy and paste the crack file into the installation directory of the software. And now you are ready to use it.

However, there is another solution I have found in astahost.com. This is solving the problem with Windows' own settings. The solution is given below:

(Taken from www.astahost.com)

1.Open the Group Policy Editor (Start > Run, type in “gpedit.msc” and press Enter).

2.Go to User Configuration > Administrative Templates> Windows Components > WindowsExplorer.

3.Here, you’ll find “Hide these specified drives in My Computer” and “Prevent access to drives from My Computer”.

4.The difference between the two settings is that “Prevent access” will allow the user to see the drive icon, but will give an error message when he tries to access it.

5.“Hide” will remove the icon so the user won’t see it, but the drive can still be accessed by using Start > Run and keying in the drive letter.

6.Under this setting, after you click the radio button next to “Enable”, you’ll see several options. Choose the one you want to
apply.

You can also go to this site and find some additional information. The link is given below:

Thanks. That is a quite useful software and method. :)

But when I lock/ prevent access to the partition, then it prevents the access to me also. I want to hide the partition for the other user. Not me. :(

This is actually the way to prevent others from accessing your drives. And I think it is not possible to let you access but keep others out of access at the same time in a same pc. When you lock or hide drives, the software lock or hides drives from all. And this is how it works. Because the software or the Windows Registry Settings can not identify you as the main user. And is it not better to keep yourself secure from others even when you are in administrator account?

bye...

"Do you have data on a partition or hard drive that you don't want tampered with or easily accessible to other users? Well, you can hide any drive/partition in Windows XP, NT, and 2000. That means that they won't show up in Explorer or My Computer.

If you want access to that drive from your user account you should create a desktop shortcut before proceeding. Once hidden, you can still access by typing the drive letter and a colon in Start/Run—for example, "D:" will bring up a folder of the contents on your D drive.

The easiest way with Win XP is to use the TweakUI power toy from Microsoft. Go to Start/Run and type in "tweakui" (without the quotes).

Go to My Computer/Drives and uncheck the drive/partition(s) you want hidden. Click "Apply" or "OK" when finished."
If you have XP but not Tweak UI you can download it here...
