I have dyed it blue.. it's currently a green-blue (that's me in the avatar lol). May I recommend Manic Panic's Ultra Violet if you do try blue. It comes out a vibrant blue that looks purple in certain light. If you don't want the purple change anything by special effects is top notch, they have several shades of blue.
Many people are scared to do off the wall colors because they worry it will ruin their hair. You do have to bleach to get popping color but if you did a dark blue over unbleached even black hair you would obtain a tint of blue. If you do decide to bleach that's actually the most detrimental thing to your hair in the whole process. The advantage of unusual shades is they only come in vegetable dyes. I could dye my hair every day and it wouldn't hurt it.
The other catch is they are hard to remove once they are in. If you're considering blue make sure you aren't going to need a regular color within the next 4-6 weeks or longer.. I had to get some out once for a job I took after I'd done it. Not fun. About 10 dish soap washes and then I dyed over it with a far darker color.
I love dying my hair though, and it's a real confidence booster, I've never gotten so many compliments on my hair in my life.. perhaps that's why I keep doing it lol.
The pic is the Ultraviolet color I mentioned. The link talks more about special effects dye and includes a guide for getting really vibrant color. :) (Yes, I wrote it.)

In coloring your hair, you must consider the following factors.
1. You original hair color. If you have dark hair lighter shade of hair color will not work right away.
2. Your skin color. If you have tan or darker skin, blonds and other lighter shade won't look good on you.
3. Test if you're sensitive or allergic to hair coloring chemicals. Test first, especially if you have virgin hair.
I'm also tan so I think blue wouldn't look good on me. I always consider number 2 reason when I pick a new color.

Umm I guess I'll have to pass. It's just that when it comes to my hair, I like the more natural shades like light brown. I've just colored my hair few months ago. My hair's natural color is dark brown, then I made it a little lighter... my hair color now is similar to this:

Actually if you don"t already know the best hair dye is Jerome Russell's punky colour. It is ultra vibrant and lasts the longest. http://www.folica.com/Jerome_Russell__d859.html

I like Punky colors and have used it before however, the dyes I've tried have had bleed issues. With Punky Color your dying your pillows, shower, and hands for the next week when the same color results can be obtained from special effects or manic panic. :)

Ha been there done that, was thinking about doing it again about a year ago, I would definitely have to say if I was going to do it again it would have to be lagoon blue, I did the dark blue for months and I'm over it. Of course if your gonna do it use Jerome Russell's Punky Hair Color definitely my favorite, and I have used pretty much everything out there. My friend actually just dyed a bit of his hair blue using Beyond The Zone, and in a couple of days it was green and mossy colored. Though if you don't mind dying it often Manic Panic works fine, my only problem with it is it fades to fast, in a couple days I notice fading and by the end of the week I would have to redye it, but anyways yeah I would probably dye it blue again, maybe not for so long this time though, I'm kinda moving out of that whole phase in my life, I'm even thinking of getting rid of my coontails, which I have had for almost two and a half years maybe longer I'm not to sure anymore.

I have always believed that hair color is like a hair cut...it will always grow out, so yes I would dye my hair blue. So far, I have not dyed all my hair blue, but I did dye it black reserving very small sections that were dyed blue. I liked it but it was too hard to maintain.
