It is my opinion that stress does not cause gray hair, although certainly some doctors have postulated that it does. This really has not been proven, and stress has been stated to be the cause of so many other ailments and maladies that the argument lacks credence.
Other than genetics (and age, which is intrinsically linked), hair treatment is usually the only cause of gray hair. Hair dyes of course, can make hair gray (whether intentionally or not -- I think most gray hair dye products probably target actresses).
Gray hair is caused by melanocytes dying due to age or functioning improperly, and no longer being able to synthesize melatonin to color the hair. Some hair treatments may also affect melanocytes, including bleach and other chemicals, although there is not much evidence to this -- certainly, the hair treatment industry does not lend much funding to studies that could potentially support this theory.

What causes hair to turn grey other than genetics?
Have an elderly friend who claims he turned grey practically overnight (within weeks) when he was young...he's not one for wild stories so wondering what would cause such a thing.

Often stress can cause it, but that's the only factor I know about other than genetics. But, you seem to imply that genetics can only cause hair to turn grey with old age. My sister has grey hair and she is 25. Her doctor blames it on genetics, although I couldn't really understand why. But genetics can cause someone's hair to go grey at any time in their life without warning.

My hair turned white over the course of my 30th year or so. I was eventually told by a chemist that loss of potassium may have something to do with it. This is hearsay, but it isn't impossible. I saw some comments on a site I am not familiar with (see below). I have not seen any true medical opinions.

Hair turns gray when the hair follicle's pigment cells die. The Melanin that produces the color is controlled by those pigment cells. So when they no longer can produce the Melanin, the hair turns gray, silver or white. Genetics can determine the age that you are when theses cells die and advancing age itself is a factor also. Stress and free radical damage have been suggested as reasons, but have never been substantiated.

I started going gray at 18, I'm guessing it was probably largely due to stress; maybe some of the chemicals or hormones released during stressful periods (e.g. adrenaline) contribute to graying. Although, my mom has an almost completely white head of hair (originally dark brown) so it could be genetics. Or some combination.
