Nevermind certainly was an excellent album and deserves plenty of recognition as such, but I think there are many albums that have come out since then that are on the same level musically and creatively.
Two examples are OK Computer by Radiohead and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness by Smashing Pumpkins. Both of these albums are absolutely amazing, and certainly the masterpieces of the respective artists.
OK Computer put a completely new spin on alternative music and delivered a very unique sound that hasn't been successfully reproduced by any other band since the album's release.
Mellon Collie was simply an epic album; it displayed a vast amount of versatility and range by the Smashing Pumpkins. Rarely before this album had a band shown that they can successfully crank out grinding, hard rock songs and then pull a complete 180 and deliver a sweeping, orchestral and melodic sound.
Obviously music is completely subjective and this is just my opinion. But I firmly believe that if Kurt Cobain had not passed away, Nevermind might lose some of it's acclaim as a 'classic' album; it's an excellent album, without a doubt, but as I said before, there has been a LOT of excellent music produced since.
On a lighter note, have you seen this before? Kind of interesting.

I tend to agree with your assessment of the classic nature of the album. However, look at the positive side of his death. Dave Grohl's talent and in my opinion the real talent behind Nirvana was able to fully develop his music and gave us he Foo Fighters. I was never fond of Kurt or his style of moaning/mumbling his lyrics. He sounded like a cow in heat half the time.
