Charities in Canada need to be registered with Revenue Canada and will have a charitable organization number
If they don't then they are likely for profit and any donations are used for their own purposes
ask for an annual report of what is done with the funds
if the amount spent on administration is more than 20% be careful or someone is lining their pockets
They have a web site as a society whatever that is

hi, I can't answer directly about a Canada business, but will give you ideas on how I check out charities.
Visit them in person, see how they treat you.
Ask what they plan to do with the donations.
Check their registration with the government, both federal and local
Ask for their balance statement, if they have a public one. See how much money goes to administration, and how much "to the people". (if they have a printed statement)
good luck!
