When my husband lost his job and we were scraping to make ends meet, I was very creative and managed to feed my family of 4 on a budget of $30 a week or less. But noodles and rice only stretch so far and if I never eat ramen noodles again, I will die happy. So when I heard about Angel Food Ministries, I was skeptical. I went ahead and ordered 2 boxes of food and when the day came we went to get our food.
I have to say, we felt like paupers that had stumbled into a royal kitchen buffet. It became a tradition to have a huge Angel meal the day the food arrived and then be more practical the rest of the time. As we became more financially stable, we bought boxes to give away (usually 2) to family or friends who couldn't drive that far (it was a drive for us back then). It was so helpful to have the extra money and enough food to eat something other than rice and noodles.
My only complaint was that we had so much chicken we always ended up going to a friends house and having a BBQ since we could never eat all the chicken and she would make a side dish and dessert.
We live in an area without Angel Food Ministries and I really miss it now. Our area could really use it.

The biggest benefit for us has been in the addition of meat to our diet, as we get two or three times the amount of meat that we would normally be able to afford.
There are also non meat offerings, ALL meat options, and a frozen meal option for Seniors. I think they just started a Hispanic section.
I have recommended this to several other families who are out of work (although you don't have to be). My son is a college student who buys and cooks his own food, and he is considering this also. He's an athlete and never gets enough protein. He eats an amazing amount of food.
If you have any questions, I know of four or five families using this besides ours, and would be happy to share with you through a private DQ.
In my opinion it is a great ministry as we can use the grocery money we save to help pay our mortgage and stay in our house.

They are wonderful and if you do not need to purchase the food that month, you are able to purchase a box for someone who does need it.

In New York, we have a similar program called Extra Helpings. Our church is one of the providers in the area and we do help out with distributing food to the community and use it ourselves sometimes. It's a great way to get a good amount of food for a small price - whether it's to get enough food to survive on in times of financial difficulty, to reduce the monthly grocery bill or simply to stock up, it's a great program!
Interestingly enough, I didn't know Angel Food Ministries existed in my area until I read your post. Turns out, they're all around me so I may have to check into this more. Thanks!

I am not sure if the program is available everywhere and if the specifics of the program are the same in all locations. You can order food online and find a local host site near you at the link below.
The only disadvantage that I found with the program is that you pay upfront, at the beginning of the month, and don't get your food until the end of the month. For someone on a tight budget, that can be a long time to wait, but in the end, the savings are worth it.
Another thing that I would recommend to others looking to cut their food bill is to look for local food coop programs. They often administer similar programs that offer more variety and fresher selections. The foods are provided by local farmers and ranchers, which can mean less food allergy complications for those more sensitive. Organic and no growth hormone meats are also often available.
In Oklahoma, try the Oklahoma Food Cooperative at the link below. You can order online, and they provide free delivery in certain locations.

Have you ever used Angel Food Ministries?
Angel Food Ministries is a non-profit outreach organization that buys fresh meats, food, produce in bulk and then repackages and distributes to outreach distributors, often churches, and sell the food to consumers like you and me.
It's not welfare, you don't have to qualify by filling out forms or have to be low-income or anything - in fact, a lot of churches ask their wealthier parishioners to use Angel Foods and donate the saved money on their groceries to charity.
Have you ever used Angel Food Ministries? Can you tell me your experiences with them? I'm managing the Mahalo page for them here: Angel Food Ministries - and I've heard wonderful things, and my friend and I are considering ordering a couple of the holiday boxes for only $36 bucks, but wanted to hear what you guys thought if you've used them. If you haven't used them, would you? Why or why not?

• Perhaps you can suggest that someone in your area start it. They say they will deliver to any area that has an interest for it and someone to manage the program!

I haven't used them but a really good friend I've known for 20 years has and she said it was wonderful! She said she saved a great chunk of money and was able to donate to a cause against pet abuse. It sounds great and I keep my eyes out whenever I accompany my mom with the grocery shopping.

We have been using Angel Food Ministries since March when I lost my job, and have been very grateful for the assistance it has given us in our food bill. I have worked for Angel Food Ministries. This service is a great thing. You save money and get great food. You get a single box, and special's if you order them. They cost a little extra but they are worth it. The food is all high quality, some of it doesnt taste that fantastic, but thats to be expected with all food right? I will definately continue to use Angel Food in the future, no question about it. I wonder why people dont like it?

We have used them several times in the past and looking at using them again. The extra food has in times past definitely kept us from having to do ramen noodles or hamburger helper only suppers. My grandmother and several of her friends on fixed incomes also used them. They are wonderful and if you do not need to purchase the food that month, you are able to purchase a box for someone who does need it.

I have used Angel Food Ministries in the past, and my mother and mother in law do use them on occasion. It is a great deal, and you get a lot of food for the money. They also accept food stamps for families going through tough times. It is a great program that anyone can use, both families in need and those looking to save money. I am not sure if the program is available everywhere and if the specifics of the program are the same in all locations. We have used it every month for a couple of years now. It has saved us so much money. I loved it this summer when they included the sea food boxes! There is absolutely no way you could buy that much seafood for that price. Here where I live now you can even order online which makes it so convenient.
