Looking at a couple sources I trust, TIME magazine and Amazon.com, there were a few titles that appeared on both TIME's top 10 and Amazon's Top 40:
1. Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth by Chris Ware (Pantheon; 2000)
2. Blankets by Craig Thompson (Top Shelf; 2003)
3. Palomar: The Heartbreak Soup Stories by Gilbert Hernandez (Fantagraphics Books; 2003)
And then the only graphic novel I've ever personally read is "Maus : A Survivor's Tale" by Art Spiegelman, which got a ton of great press when it came out in '92. Very moving. (#4 on Amazon's list)
And of course you could just read some other Alan Moore stuff: "From Hell" and "V For Vendetta" were both made into successful films and are on Amazon's list (#'s 10 and 14, respectively...Watchmen came in at #1, btw).

The graphic novel of "V for Vendetta" was excellent, too. The movie got the flavor of it pretty well.
Enjoy!

I'm partial to the Neil Gaiman "Sandman" series. It's pretty dark, but every so often I have to enjoy a little good, creative dark. It's also very complex, with intriguing characters. The graphic novel of "V for Vendetta" was excellent, too. The movie got the flavor of it pretty well.
Enjoy!
