Just got a TomTom and have to say I'm quite happy with it. Customizable voices and graphics, downloadable updates from the net, all the usual features. Does not have the fancy stuff like MP3 or Bluetooth or voice recognition, but all I wanted was a little person to tell me when to turn left.
I've only got the simpler unit, the 125, which ran closer to $100 than your limit. You could likely get a fancier version.

If you want a GPS for geocaching, I greatly enjoy my Magellan eXplorist (100 or 200 are both great, and under $200)

I bought the Garmin nüvi as well. Great GPS, easy to use. One of the reasons I choose this model was the ability to load MP3s on an SD card and play them through the GPS. Touch screen works good, easy to program. All & all I'm very pleased with it! Unfortunately the tiny speaker didn't work too well for this application. Ozark

A few notes though: You have to press the screen much harder than I would have expected. The battery doesn't last very long. The car adapter is difficult to get in and out since it is so recessed.
Bonus I did not mention earlier, I don't think it ever says "Recalculating". If you change the route on your own, it just recalculates automatically.
