I own a TomTom One (original) and have used a Garmin. The Garmin was very confusing to me.
I like the TomTom because you can modify it and there's a great user community. http://www.tomtomforums.com/

As a tech person I don't mind a little trial and error or experimentation with different options, but I am hesitant to recommend them to people I know.

TomTom, Magellan, or Garmin? Which GPS manufacturer has the better interface?
I have a TomTom Go 720 but have also used a very old Magellan and an entry level Garmin Nuvi. I am wondering if any of the other brands are better than what I bought.

• What I was looking for was a comparison of the manufacturers and Dr. Matt had the best answer. I would've like some more specifics but then again I didn't offer a tip...

The user community and the ability to download updated maps (at no additional charge) and offer changes to maps (MapShare) was a key selling point for me.

Are you going to buy a new one? Or are you checking if you bought the right one? If you still have to buy one, you should also look at Navigon (http://navigonusa.com/) They have models with all the options like real-time traffic and updates of maps. But I really like their Landmark view.

I have already bought one. I'm not checking to see if I bought the right one I would like to get a feel for other people's impressions of the other brands as there may be features that I missed. I tend to recommend various Consumer Electronic devices for friends and family so I like to have as much info as possible to provide as unbiased a recommendation as possible

I have used TomTom for years and although I like the big easy to read buttons on the home screen, overall I am not impressed with the interface. So many things (volume control) have the most non intuitive method of being accessed. As a tech person I don't mind a little trial and error or experimentation with different options, but I am hesitant to recommend them to people I know.

The UI was what really got me to look at the TomTom but then I heard some bad things regarding lack of updated maps until recently.
