The yellow color is mainly caused by a pigment known as urochrome. Urochrome is the generic term for a variety of metabolites of different origins that result in dyeing the urine. Part of urochromes are intermediate catabolic products of hemoglobin. But there are many others and also certain food or medication may directly or indirectly influence the color of urine. The color is usually some shade of yellow or amber. However, it may be affected by disease, injuries or medication. It can range from red, pink, green, blue, brown to black.
A healthy person's urine can vary in color, too. The most important factor is the concentration of urochrome in the urine. The greater the concentration, the stronger the yellow color. E.g. if you're dehydrated, the concentration is higher and the color more intense.
The color of urine may also change when it's stored outside the body depending on temperature: if urine is cooled down, it gets darker towards red. If warmed up again to body temperature, it gets lighter again.

According to the Science in Action blog site, urine is yellow due to chemicals called urobilins, which comes from the bile pigment, bilirubin. Urobilins are also responsible for the yellow color of jaundice and bruises. According to Medline Plus, dark yellow or orange urine may be a result of taking laxatives or B complex vitamins or carotene. Dyes used in candy may also alter the color of urine.
