What's the most effective way to power nap?
I get off work at 4, have dinner plans at 8, but am exhausted. I need a quick way to get some energy for tonight without caffeine!

Get some really good earplugs! Take a shower to relax. If you can find it before you get home, get some Magna-Calm at a health food store--some will have sample packets. It forces your muscles to relax. You can take tablets, and that would be better than nothing, but get the Magna-Calm if you can.
Then shower, turn off all the lights, put in the earplugs, and cover your eyes with something light-weight and knit cotton. Set your alarm for 1/2 hour. The ideal time for a power nap is 20 minutes! That gives you 10 minutes to fall asleep.
Most people will hit the point of needing a nap between 3 and 5, so try to do it then.

Yes, 20 minutes is the ideal time for a power nap, I read that in something legit once. :) (No point in posting that since Tracebooks has it covered, but I thought I'd back it up.)

This sounds like a question about how to get good energy more than taking a power nap. Frankly, a power nap will likely get you more tired and drowsy than before, although it may be slightly refreshing. I would skip the nap altogether. When you get home, drink a bunch of water and have an apple or some other fruit, maybe some sunflower seeds or some kind of grain. You'll feel a nice natural kick from all that, and you'll get a second rush of energy once you're out with your friend.
I used to work 12 hour days on Friday nights and would always go out to some bars after work. I would be exhausted at the end of my day but would find that once I got to the bar and had one drink and began socializing, I got a second wind and didn't even notice that I was tired for the rest of the night(typically past 3 AM).

Find a dark room (even a closet will do in a pinch), something like a jacket or throw pillow to rest your head, turn out the lights and/or close the door and nap.
When you wake up, take a B-complex supplement with some fruit juice to give you a boost.

Laying down for a half hour or so (even if you don't actually fall asleep) can be a good way to help relieve some of the exhaustion of the day and get you some added energy. While power naps can work, they will often leave you feeling groggy and more tired that when you woke up. Turn on some relaxing music, lay your head down on your pillow, and just relax your mind - without closing your eyes. Sometimes it's not your mind that needs a nap, but your body!
